This Father's Day, why not show Dad that you pay attention to the little things that matter, and help him treat the family car right with the Car Care app from Apple's App Store? Designed for the iPhone (but somewhat scalable for the iPad), this app allows Dad to set up maintenance alerts, plan tune-ups, monitor fuel efficiency, and track information over several cars. If you think that you can sidestep a discussion about failing memory, this app could go a long way to saving Dad money and frustration in the long term.
What Car Care does well:
First and foremost, Car Care performs the functions of an automobile performance spreadsheet, but without the mind-numbing wall of data points. If you're good about updating your car's odometer reading and gas purchases, it can help you track information and trends in a simple format that's not only easy to understand, but helpful in alerting you to possible maintenance issues. On top of this, you can also schedule alerts to pop up at regular mileage intervals to perform preventative maintenance, like replace power steering fluid, oil, etc.
What Car Care doesn't do so well:
Car Care was developed for the iPhone, and it's very apparent that 0 thought was paid to use with an iPad. If you try to use it on the popular tablet, you'll notice right away that it was never meant to be displayed on a screen that large, and it looks either tiny, or awful. Those are your two options. That being said, if you use the app on an iPhone, you shouldn't run into any issues at all, though the app is apparently unable to rotate if you hold your device in a landscape orientation.
Additionally, the app is only as useful as you are diligent about updating your odometer. Though the technology may exist one day to sync your car data with your phone, the app requires you to update your odometer reading often in order to calculate things like gas mileage and when to alert you to a preventative maintenance milestone, like getting your oil changed. If you forget to do this often, the app can't help you.
Worth the download?
If you or your father are somewhat forgetful about maintaining your car, or even if you just want a gentle notification system to help you baby your buggy, Car Care should meet your needs. Though the app costs $2.99 in the App Store, you can use it to pay for itself by helping you become a more attentive car owner, and protect your investment for the long haul. Currently, the app is unavailable for Android, and can only be found in the App Store.
